NE Fisheries Council’s Detailed Recommendation On Cod Crisis – “Just Do Something”

cape cod fishing

Southcoasttoday.com – NOAA Fisheries Regional Administrator John Bullard has the Gulf of Maine cod crisis all to himself after the New England Regional Fisheries Council found no consensus and simply voted to ask him to just do something.

The council spent most of Wednesday morning hearing mostly criticism of the council’s plan to sharply restrict cod fishing from Cape Cod Bay to Eastport, Maine, which would have the side effect of putting charter fishing boats out of business.

The council then spent three hours in the afternoon debating a motion to ask Bullard to take some specific actions, but eventually the motion failed in an 8-9 vote, with member John Quinn of Dartmouth voting ‘no.’

Member Thomas Dempsey of Chatham scolded the council, saying that the failure to pass the motion was an “enormous mistake.”

He said the council was abdicating, “handing control over to the agency.”

When member Doug Grout of Durham, N.H., then made a motion simply asking Bullard to do something, without being specific, Bullard called it the worst of three proposals, but better than nothing.

Genius! After three hours of debate, with the future of the fishing industry on Cape Cod and beyond in their hands, the council dedicated to fishing has come to the conclusion that some other council should “Just do something”. Obviously, such a thoughtful and detailed plan was met with overwhelming approval, members gushing over the decision called the plan an “enormous mistake”, “the worst of three proposals”, and “better than nothing”. Talk about a ringing endorsement!

Hopefully this sparks a revolution in Cape Cod politics. When the powers that be have no idea what the hell to do about an issue they can just pass the buck and ask someone else to “just do something”. Oh, there’s an affordable housing problem? Just do something. The water table is rising and we are facing a massive wastewater problem? Just do something. John Bullard really hit the nail on the head. Everyone knows that “something”, while a horrible plan, is indeed better than “nothing”.

We could change the welcome signs at the bridges:

“Welcome to Cape Cod, it’s really something, which is better than nothing… right?”

VIDEO: Cape Cod Coast Guard Helicopter Rescues Four Lobsterman

Globe – A Coast Guard helicopter from Cape Cod hoisted four lobstermen to safety after their boat sank in 250 feet of water about 40 miles south of Block Island, R.I., Thursday morning, officials said.

The four men aboard the 60-foot Sakonnet Lobster sent a distress call at about 4:15 a.m. after the boat began taking on water, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

By 6:40 a.m., the crew had abandoned ship, dressed in survival suits. By 7 a.m., a Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter had arrived from Cape Cod and hoisted all four men to safety, the Coast Guard said.

“These are very lucky, but also very prepared fishermen,” Lieutenant Matt Vanderslice, the co-pilot of the aircraft from Air Station Cape Cod, said in the statement. “They had all the right gear onboard, it worked, and they knew how to use it. That’s why they’re safely back on land today.”

Not much to see here, just dramatic footage of our Cape Cod Coast Guard at work, saving lives is just what they do.

Mass DOT Clear Cuts Thousands Of Trees On Route 6 – Welcome To Cape Jersey

route 6 trees

CBS – Drivers who routinely use Route 6 on the Cape have likely noticed all of the trees in a stretch of median almost all gone.

“I don’t know what the concerns were with the trees but it took a lot of the beauty away,” said Sagamore resident Heather Gallo. “I think it’s kind of bare now.”

State Representative Randy Hunt, who represents part of the Cape in the Massachusetts legislature, says he’s been besieged by emails and Facebook messages from angry constituents over so many trees wiped out.

“I see no reason for mowing down perfectly healthy 30 to 40-year old trees,” said Hunt.

In an email to WBZ-TV, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said there were a number of reasons for clearing the trees, including public safety, but the project has been halted for the time being.

“And I think part of what people come down here for the Cape is the ambiance, the nature, the scenery, and it’s horrific, it’s absolutely horrific what they’ve done,” said Harwich resident Chuck O’Connor.

Sons of Cape Cod! I am Hippie. And I see a whole army of my peninsulamen, here in defiance of tyranny! You have come to fight as tree men. And tree men you are! What will you do without trees on the median? Will you fight?

Fight and you may die. Run and you will live at least awhile. And dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance, to come back here as young men and tell the Mass DOT that they may take our trees, but they will never take… our freedom!

P.S. Don’t Jersey The Cape

The Fun Police Are Still Trying To Block Zip Lines At Heritage Gardens

heritage

CapeCodOnline.com – Neighbors upset with an aerial adventure park planned for Heritage Museums & Gardens will take their fight to the Zoning Board of Appeals. On Friday, several neighbors appealed a decision by Building Inspector Paul Spiro to issue a building permit for the park, which would include zip lines and rope bridges on a 4-acre wooded parcel at Heritage.

Blair Haney, the town’s director of planning and economic development, said the appeal will be heard by the zoning board at a hearing tentatively scheduled for Oct. 28. The appeal is based on the belief that an amusement park is not allowed in a residential district, Haney said.

“Everything was done behind our back,” said Carlo DiPersio of Morgan Trail, one of the neighbors who filed the appeal. Neighbors are worried about how much traffic the park might generate. Spiro granted the permit because Heritage is exempt from zoning as a nonprofit educational facility, Haney said. DiPersio said he wants the public to know the fight isn’t about the museum, but about the proposed changes.

“We’ve been neighbors with Heritage for 43 years. We love Heritage,” he said. “We are the guardians of the spirit of Heritage.”

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills every time I read about how much the fun police hate these zip lines. It’s some ropes in the woods for fucks sake. It’s going to give some kids something to do besides get in trouble. I just don’t understand how anyone can be so upset about this, but then I read that last quote…

“We are the guardians of the spirit of Heritage.” – Carlo DiPersio

Ummm… no you’re not! You happen to own a house nearby. You have absolutely zero claim to guardianship of Heritage, none, zilch, nada! This is the lunacy that is the fun police, this guy legitimately thinks he owns the fucking place because he lives near it. There is an absolutely amazing amount of self importance on display here folks.

These people need to get a grip, they aren’t building a casino, it’s a nonprofit educational facility putting some ropes in a few trees for kids to play on. Someone needs to pull a Kanye when this guy is talking at the hearing and yell “Carlo DiPersio hates young people!”

Good News Cape Cod, Your Electric Bill Is Going Up 50% Next Month

nstar

NP – National Grid customers will see their electric bills jump nearly 50 percent from October to November, according to the company.

“This is quite a spike,” said John Howat, senior energy analyst for the National Consumer Law Center, who said the upcoming cost per kilowatt hour is a record high. He told the News Service, “This is a dynamic that’s occurring in the wholesale power market.”

This winter’s electric rates, which kick in Saturday, Nov. 1, will be 37 percent higher than last winter’s rates and 49 percent higher than current rates, according to National Grid spokesman Jake Navarro.

NSTAR, which serves portions of Metro Boston and Cape Cod, and Western Massachusetts Electric Company, which serves the western part of the state, are expected to file their rates in mid-November for a period beginning Jan. 1.

Seems legit.

NSTAR is just one of those companies that has us by the short and curlies. They can teabag us with higher prices whenever they want and we are powerless to stop them. What are you gonna do, boycott electricity? Nope… nuts to the face it is!

Can you imagine if your favorite sandwich shop raised their prices 50% overnight? How about if pumpkin beer were all of a sudden $25 a twelve pack at your local packy? It would cause social media activism not seen since KONY 2012, basic betches would be out in droves picketing the store in their North Face jackets, yoga pants, and Uggs. They would be boycotted and out of business in a week.

Not NSTAR though, they just jack our shit up on a whim and then throw some chemicals into the ground for good measure. Someone should really think about putting some windmills out in the ocean or something…

Names Released Of The Two Skydivers Who Died In Marstons Mills

skydive cape cod

PJ – Two skydivers died after crashing into a barn Sunday, the Cape Cod Times is reporting.

The two men were connected by a harness and using one parachute, the Barnstable police told the Cape Cod Times.

Officials released the names of the two men on Monday. They are Andrew Munson, 29, of Nantucket and his skydive instructor Eldon Burrier, 48, of West Lynnwood, Washington.

They were jumping in tandem using the same parachute from a Skydive Barnstable plane operating out of Cape Cod Airfield when they struck the garage on the property across the street from the airfield, according to a statement from Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe’s office.

The incident is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Troopers assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office and the Aeronautics Division of the state Department of Transportation.

Just a shitty situation all around. Hopefully they figure out what went wrong so this never happens again.
